Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is ELM Meditation?

ELM Meditation is a simple mantra-based meditation practice designed to allow the mind to settle naturally into deeper states of rest and awareness.

There is no need to force the mind to become quiet or to concentrate intensely.

Q. How often should I meditate?

In general, ELM Meditation is practiced twice a day. A typical meditation session lasts around 20 to 30 minutes, although the practice can be adjusted depending on your schedule and condition.

Q. How long should I wait before receiving another mantra?

As a general guideline, it is recommended to allow at least two months before receiving the next mantra. This gives you time to become familiar with the current practice and allow the meditation to deepen naturally.

Q. Is ELM Meditation available online?

At present, mantra instruction is offered in person. Online instruction may become available in the future. If you are interested but are unable to travel, please feel free to inquire. If there is sufficient interest, instruction may also be arranged in Japan or other parts of Southeast Asia.

Q. Can children learn ELM Meditation?

Yes. There is a special Children’s Mantra practice designed according to the child’s age and stage of development. A child may receive the Children’s Mantra only when a parent or guardian has already received ELM Meditation instruction. From age 15, the Love Mantra may be received.

Q. Is follow-up support included?

Yes.

2 follow-up sessions are included after mantra instruction. These sessions may also be done via Zoom when needed. Regular group meditation sessions may also be offered, including online sessions.

Q. Do I need previous meditation experience?

No.

ELM Meditation can be learned by beginners. There is no need to have previous experience with meditation, yoga or other spiritual practices.

Q. Do I need to stop my thoughts during meditation?

No.

Thoughts may come and go naturally during meditation. There is no need to suppress them or force the mind to become blank.

Q. Is ELM Meditation a religious practice?

ELM Meditation is not taught as a religion. Although some mantras and symbols have roots in ancient traditions, the practice itself is presented as a meditation method that can be used regardless of religious background.

Q. How do I know which mantra is right for me?

You do not need to decide completely on your own. Each mantra has a different focus, and we can discuss your current situation, interests and stage of practice before you choose. You can also explore the individual mantra pages for more details.

Q. Can I receive instruction outside Malaysia?

Yes, depending on location and scheduling. If several people are interested in the same area, instruction may be arranged in Japan or other parts of Southeast Asia. Please inquire for details.

Q. How can I apply?

Please use the inquiry form and let me know which mantra you are interested in. If you are not sure which one is right for you, you are welcome to ask before applying.

Q. What is the Puja ceremony?

The mantra instruction includes a traditional Puja ceremony.

In ELM Meditation, the Puja is part of the traditional process through which the mantra is prepared and given to the student. Through the Puja, the mantra is enlivened with life force before it is given to the student.

The fruit and flowers you are asked to bring are used as offerings during this ceremony. If coconuts are readily available where you live, please bring one as well.

The Puja is part of the meditation tradition and does not require you to follow any particular religion or belief.
